Hannah creates Ant in her journal as a child. Her father, Daniel, works for a man in the government named Apollo Steele. A bully’s actions cause Hannah to get hit by a car, putting her in the hospital. Her father, apparently not wanting her to get hurt again, develops something for Steele that seems to be inspired by Hannah’s journal.
Daniel’s coworker, Karl, tries to warn him that the government will have them killed once they’ve completed their project. Daniel doesn’t believe it. But then Steele shuts the project down, so Daniel steels his development and leaves. Then Karl turns up dead, and then he and Hannah are attacked. Daniel is shot, and he injects Hannah with the development. This turns her into Ant.
Hannah manges to get her dad to firemen, and then she takes off, exploring her newfound power. Without explanation, she wakes up in an alley, and Apollo Steele is there to greet her, claiming to be a friend of her father’s.
